About Us
Talk of the Toon is one of those side-hussles with it's origin in the Coronaviris lockdown. We're hoping in time it grows into a really great resource for our local community, a fun and informative place for all Newcastle United fans and that it supports the great work of the Newcastle United Foundation whom we have been lucky enough to benefit from personally over the years. Our motivation stems from our own passion for the club and city, my son's involvement over the years with Newcastle United Foundation and from a desire to both try something different and to teach a 10 year old how to set up a quality website for the community from scratch. Make no mistake though, this is a serious venture and we aim to provide quality for our visitors and hope you will come back time and again.
"Us" at present consists of myself (Phil) and my son (Harry, 10) who is mad about Newcastle. When it is time to grow our reach we will add to our team. We want to approach this from the outset with a focus on community. It is for that reason that we will include our Youth Blog. As a teacher by day job I can see tremendous potential to engage young people in writing about their favourite club. This website will hopefully give them a real audience and outlet to showcase their views and ideas. It goes without saying that all articles featured will be chosen carefully, vetted, parental permission will be given to post their work and no sensitive information about any young person will be included in posts beyond their name, age and the town in which they live (with permission from parents).
Where do we source our articles on the news page? These come from news articles and blogs in the public domain which we source and update.
Who writes our blog posts? We do. They are our own views informed by current events around the club and the rich history of our club. We are not journalists but fans. We invite your discussion around our own posts (not youth posts) and hope you will engage with us and each other whether you agree or disagree with our views. We aim to post regularly once a fortnight (more frequently when there is a genuine breaking story) and believe this is frequently enough alongside other news we provide. What we don't want to do is to regurgitate existing stories and posts by other bloggers which we already link to. We won't post just for the sake of posting - just when we have something to say or contribute!
Where do we source our items for sale? The vast majority of our products come from an officially licensed source and orders are fulfilled by them. This is a professional and established service and you should have no concerns about any order you place. We also had fun creating a number of custom designed products which we hope you will like. All items are clearly labelled as either officially licensed or unofficial custom design. It goes without saying that none of the custom designs include any information or designs which would be in breach of copyright or trademark.
How do we support the Newcastle United Foundation? As we only launched mid-May 2020 our site is probably some way off paying for itself or making any sort of profit. It remains to be seen whether it even will. However, in time we hope that quality items sold at a fair price and advertisements will generate profit. Each month 10% of all profit we make directly through this site will be donated to the Newcastle United Foundation via their just giving page which you can find here. This is subject to change and if we can justify giving more or decide we wish to contribute to other causes related to our site we will. This site is not our primary means of income so we feel that it absolutely should give something back to our community.
